Equity Markets:
Key Market Triggers
- Geopolitics & Crude Oil Spike: Headwinds intensified significantly due to the escalation of the US-Iran conflict in the Middle East. Brent crude shot up to around $108 per barrel, raising serious concerns regarding India's import bill, inflation, and corporate earnings trajectory.
- US Bond Yields & Inflation: A primary driver of the global equity correction is the rise in US bond yields. The US 10-year yield approached the critical 5% mark (touching 4.98%), driven by hotter-than-expected US Producer Price Index (PPI) data. This has heightened market nervousness regarding a potential rate hike by the US Federal Reserve next week.
- Primary Market Liquidity Drain: The booming Indian IPO market continues to draw massive retail and institutional interest. Heavy oversubscriptions and attractive listing gains have essentially sucked substantial liquidity away from the secondary equity markets.
- Foreign Outflows: Rising US bond yields and a depreciating rupee (which slipped past 95.70 against the US dollar) triggered significant foreign capital outflows throughout the week, further dampening sentiment.
