Equity Markets:
Key Market Triggers
- RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC): The RBI held its policy meeting from August 3 to August 5. While the market largely priced in a status-quo rate decision, the central bank's commentary on inflation, domestic growth, and external risks caused cautious repositioning in rate-sensitive sectors like banking and autos.
- Crude Oil & Geopolitical Jitters: After cooling off in the previous week, Brent crude prices rebounded to trade higher at $83.45 per barrel by Friday. This spike followed renewed concerns over diplomatic negotiations involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, reviving fears of prolonged disruptions to energy corridors and triggering a risk-off sentiment globally.
- New Market Mechanics: A structural change to price discovery was implemented on Monday, August 3. Stock exchanges introduced a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for shares with futures and options (F&O) contracts to make closing prices more transparent.
